12:30 – Free-Time (We encourage everyone to eat lunch in town before taking a self-guided tour of the Peppersauce Alley Ghost-Town, Historic Main Street, and the Calcio Rock Music Hall. Participants can use this time to explore and shop Historic Calcio Rock!)
2 PM Depart for Historic Trimble House
2:10 PM Arrive at Historic Trimble House (We'll hear a presentation about the Trimble House and have an auction for a beautiful hand-turned Elm bowl made by Dan Massey of Melbourne. We'll also draw for door prizes.
3:00 PM Tour Concludes

Things to Consider

Walking tour – If you have trouble walking on uneven ground or climbing up and down moderate obstacles, you will want to wait and join us for the Road Tour. The short walk to Hobo's Den is beautiful but somewhat tricky.
There is a chance of rain this coming Saturday, so…you might want to include umbrellas or other rain-gear.
An autumn chill is likely early, so you'll also want to dress in layers.
Participants should consider bringing a snack and drink…especially those participating in the walking-tour
Please plan on dining in Calico during our free-time before exploring the shops and historic sites around Main-Street and the Ghost-Town. Self-Guided Tour-guides will be provided.
The EIC Crew puts a lot of time into planning and executing these events in order to help local preservation projects in Izard County. Please honor our efforts via donations or purchasing the T-Shirts we will have available commemorating the "Calico Rockin'-The Bluff City Bash" tour. We really want to help the new Calico Rock History Museum through our effort.
We will be having a short auction at the Trimble House for a beautiful hand-turned elm bowl fashioned by artist, Dan Massey from Melbourne.
If you're planning to stay overnight for the tour, please consider booking accommodations at one of our sponsor's facilities: The Historic Riverview Hotel, Calico Bluff Cabins, or Cedar Rock Lodge…all located in Calico Rock.
Be sure to bring cameras with fully-charged batteries and fresh memory cards/film. You'll not want to miss the photo-opportunities on this trip!
There should be no problem finding a place to use the bathroom on this one!
All participants will be required to sign a liability waiver for the properties we visit.
If you bring children, be aware that at some locations on the tour, there will be extreme heights to deal with.
We will be splitting the group up once we park at Peppersauce Alley so we won't overwhelm the limited space in both the Riverview Hotel and Museum.

The Magical History Tour!

Exploring Izard County is pleased to announce its Fall Road Trip, "The Magical History Tour", on Saturday, October 24th beginning at 10:00 A.M.

"The Magical History Tour" will begin in historic Mount Olive near the Mount Olive Presbyterian Church and visit several historic sights in the area including the A.C. Jeffery Homeplace, the Jehoiada Jeffery Homeplace, and the Old Jeffery Cemetery. From Mount Olive, the tour will proceed to Boswell for photo opportunities of the Post-Office and store-building before continuing to the top of the hill where the newly refurbished Boswell School, now the Boswell Baptist Church, stands.

Several activities are planned for the event including historical lectures about Mount Olive, the Jeffery Family, Boswell, and Civil War in the Ozarks. Also planned for the event is a "History-Swap" at the Old Boswell Schoolhouse where we will invite participants to bring two or three treasured heirlooms or relics as well as vintage photos, documents, and letters to share with others on the tour.

The tour will conclude with live entertainment at the Old Boswell Schoolhouse in the early afternoon.

As with all of our Road Trips, the EIC Crew will be raising funds to contribute to an important historic project in Izard County. This Fall, we will be accepting donations during the tour and offering T-Shirts and other items for sale. All proceeds will benefit the Melbourne Museum. The Melbourne Museum is a worthy recipient of the fruits of our collective effort to help preserve the history and culture of Izard County. If you have never visited this important museum, we encourage you to take a few minutes when in the Mebourne area to browse the many excellent artifacts, photos, and documents that have been donated. Exploring Izard County is honored to be able to contribute to the operation of this resource.

"Spring Splash" Road Trip - April 25th, 2009

Exploring Izard County Announces its "Spring Splash" Road Trip on April 25

The web-site, Exploring Izard County, will be hosting its third Road Trip on Saturday April 25^th, 2009. The "Spring Splash" Road Trip will visit the Gid, Guion, and Lafferty areas of Izard County and will include stops at the Gid Waterfall, the Guion Schoolhouse, Lafferty Spring, Lafferty Mill Dam, and the Gristmill Waterfall at Gid. During the tour, participants will hear historical presentations about the area including one about the Lafferty Family history by a direct descendent of John and Sarah Lafferty, Mrs. Mary Lafferty Wilson from Gainesville, Missouri. Participants will drive the tour in the comfort and privacy of their personal vehicles. A pic-nic lunch is planned for the last stop on the "Spring Splash" Road Trip as well as musical entertainment, games, and a hike to a large well-occupied shelter cave nearby.

As with other events hosted by Exploring Izard County, this one is to raise funds to help preserve an Izard County historic treasure. All donations and all proceeds from sales of T-Shirts and other merchandise by the organizers will be forwarded to the Izard County Historical and Genealogical Society to support its efforts to move and restore the James and Phoebe Trimble House. The treasure was recently given to the Historical Society and must be moved to Cumberland Heritage Park in Calico Rock. The Trimble House is dated to 1815 and is documented as being the oldest standing home in the county having been built by a family of the very earliest pioneers of the area. The Izard County Historical and Genealogical Society estimates the project will cost around $10, 000.

Exploring Izard County is pleased to announce that the Izard County Historical and Genealogical Society will be joining us for this event as its own Spring Meeting. The organization will have a table with books, past issues of the Izard County Historian, and applications for membership available to participants.

Brian & Jeanette Driscoll In Concert

On Saturday, October 25th 2008 at 7P.M., Exploring Izard County will host a Concert at the Lunenburg Community Center near Melbourne featuring the music of Brian and Jeanette Driscoll.

Mr. Driscoll will also be making a presentation of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program for which he is the Technical Assistance Coordinator and will speak to those in attendance about the National Register of Historic Places, the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, and how area landowners can get assistance in helping to preserve the historic treasures located on their properties. The Concert and Presentation are free and open to the public as we will ask for donations to help the ongoing restoration project for the Lunenburg Community Center. All donations from the public and sponsorships from area businesses will be forwarded to the Lunenburg Community Center Association to use as it sees fit.

Following is a short biography of our performers/lecturer for the event, Brian and Jeanette Driscoll:

Brian and Jeanette Driscoll have been performing music together for nearly 25 years. Their musical influences are drawn from a wide variety of both electric and acoustic styles and their choice of material is diverse, including folk, blues, bluegrass, gospel, and country.

Brian is an accomplished, seasoned musician, who plays guitar and mandolin. Listeners appreciate his ability to move easily from fast, hot, flatpicking songs to those requiring a slow, melodic touch. He and Jeanette weave their voices around tight harmonies and instrumental melodies as they share their musical interpretations and original compositions with audiences. Their uniqueness is found in both their choice of music and their arrangements. Whether singing the blues, a quick bluegrass song, or a mournful ballad, their performance is a winning combination of impressive musicianship and emotional commitment to the material.

Brian and Jeanette were founding members of the acoustic band Southwind based in Wichita, Kansas during the 1980’s. Southwind played festivals, concerts, and clubs throughout the Midwest for five years. They received a grant from the Kansas Arts Council which enabled them to take their music throughout that state, playing community concerts and festivals. During this time they also performed as the opening act for various artists including Ricky Skaggs, Emmy Lou Harris, Jethro Burns, John McEwen, Bryan Bowers, and Bill Monroe.

Brian was the winner of the solo division at the 2002Arkansas Acoustic Festival held in Conway, where his original music won him an opening spot at the Nickel Creek concert. As relative newcomers to the region, Brian and Jeanette Driscoll are beginning to make their musical presence known throughout the state.
